Where the US elections 2008 could only manage a 61% (the highest in 40 years) voter turnout in spite of the interest generated by Obama, the first phase of the 15th Election in India had a surprising voter turnout varying from 80% in some constituencies to mark an average turnout of 73% in Kerala & 65 % in A.P & Maharashtra and naxal , maoist infested bihar, chatisgarh, jharkhand, U.P, Orissa recording just around 50%. A higher voter turnout makes predictions difficult. It is when the people as a mass want to make a statement that the turnout rises. If it is low, then the card carrying party members and party strength in that particular constituency determines the outcome. It is the unbiased, non party members who decide the fate and that is exactly what brings them out to vote. |
